The deadline to register to vote in the Aug. 26 civic elections is today, according to Marengo County registrar Barry Hunt.

“If they mail in their registration, as long as it is postmarked by the 15th, we will take it,” he said.

People who want to register to vote may do so in the Marengo County registrar’s office in the basement of the Marengo County Courthouse on Coats Avenue in Linden. It will be open until 4:30 p.m.

The office registered 117 new voters in the month of July, and took in 67 new voters in the first two weeks of August.

“It’s been very active,” Hunt said. “We should have a medium to high turnout in the city elections. It has received more attention than the last three city elections we’ve had.”

Through Thursday, 4,884 people were registered to vote in the city of Demopolis, while 1,603 people were registered in the city of Linden.

Those numbers reflect 66.1 percent of the 2007 population of Demopolis, which was 7,385, and 70.2 percent of the 2007 population of Linden, which was 2,285. Census figures were found at the U.S. Census Bureau Web site at www.census.gov/
