It rained — and then it didn’t. And then, it rained — and then, it didn’t.

For several days, Marengo County put up with the on-again, off-again rains brought about by the remnants of Hurricane Fay, and although it may have seemed like Noah’s Ark Construction should have been on standby, the county didn’t really receive a lot of rain or damage.

The off-and-on rain was termed “banded activity” caused by the spiraling of Fay by the National Weather Service in Birmingham, which said the southeast portion of Marengo County — including Thomaston, Magnolia and Vineland — got 5 to 6 inches of rain, while the northern end, including Demopolis, had 3 to 4 inches.

Marengo County Emergency Management Agency director Kevin McKinney also reported light damage caused by the storms.

There were at least 40 trees down on county roads over that time,” McKinney said. “There were also some power lines down. The roads are cleared now, and the power crews were out working on Monday, mostly in remote areas, so I think they completed their work (Tuesday).”

Southern Alabama now braces for what should become Hurricane Gustav, which is predicted to be just south of Mobile Bay in the Gulf of Mexico on Monday morning.
