Lois Erin Hughey Ullery, 92, died in Orange, Texas at Hermann Memorial Hospital on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008.
Lois was born near Sprott, Ala. Nov. 3, 1915, the eldest child of Elbert McElroy and Etha Pearl Dunkin Hughey. Lois was educated in area schools. She was valedictorian in her high school class and graduated from Livingston Teacher’s College. She taught all grades at a small school near her home before moving to Montgomery to begin a life long career in banking. She spent many years working in Birmingham area banks.
In 1973 Lois retired to her ancestral home, “Tater Hill,” in Perry County. She had many visitors and was known for her kind and loving ways. She was a local historian and storyteller. Her remembrances of life in Perry County will be greatly missed.
Lois, also known as Grams, Glams and Glamma to her grandchildren, touched each of their lives in so many ways. Her loving personality and never ending selflessness showed constantly in the form of cooking, sewing, writing long letters and reliving memories. She will be remembered for those things always.
She is survived by her son John W. and wife, Mary Jean Prather of Orange, Texas and grandchildren, Astra L. Prather of Fort Worth, Jesse A. Prather of Los Angeles and Chase A. Prather of Orange, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her husbands John W. Prather and Samuel D. Ullery and her brother Leon Hughey. Lois was the oldest member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church. Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. at Mt. Olive Cemetery Sept. 17 with Rev. Paul Reitzer officiating.
