Christian Chapel Baptist Church in Demopolis is organizing a walk in honor of women who have fought breast cancer.

Church member and three-year breast cancer survivor Jeannette Johnson said in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the church wanted to honor the women involved in the fight and educate others about the disease.

“This program is designed to educate and bring about awareness and early detection of breast cancer and other forms of cancer that can affect many females,” she said. “The program will begin with a one mile walk.”

The walk will be followed by breakfast at the church and various speakers who will educate the ladies in attendance about proper cancer screenings and exams.

The walk will begin at 7 a.m. at the Demopolis Board of Education Oct. 18 and will conclude at Christian Chapel Baptist Church on West Decatur Street.

The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) program is dedicated to increasing awareness about the importance of the early detection of breast cancer through a nationwide campaign. NBCAM started as a weeklong campaign in 1985 with two founding members. Today the American Cancer Society is one of many national public service organizations, professional associations, and government agencies that form the NBCAM Board of Sponsors.

During October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the member organizations of the Board of Sponsors join forces to spread the message that early detection of breast cancer followed by prompt treatment saves lives.
