The mission of the March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality through research, community services, education and advocacy.

People can help that mission by donating to the March of Dimes through its community activities, like this Saturday’s March of Dimes Walk.

The annual Walk provides a means for people to help with their cause through donations. The Walk begins Saturday at the City Landing pavilion near the intersection of Commissioners Avenue and Childress Street in Demopolis. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and the Walk begins at 9.

Participants will walk along Main Avenue into historic downtown Demopolis, then make a circle and come back again to the pavilion.

The March of Dimes has already begun taking in donations, thanks to the generosity of March of Dimes volunteers and generous people.

“Robertson Banking Company has raised over $2,000,” said Jennifer Thomason, the community director for the March of Dimes. “Tommy Vice has surpassed his goal from last year; he has raised $1,636.”

Thomason noted that fellow RBC employee Patricia Braxton was the top fund-raiser from the bank, raising more than $200.

“We’ll find out the total amount raised on Saturday morning,” Thomason said.

Windham Lee Jr., the 2-year-old son of Windham and Teila Lee of Demopolis, was named this year’s ambassador child for the March of Dimes last week.

People can register to participate in the Walk at the site Saturday at 8:30 a.m. They can also make donations at that time.
