Several Demopolis-area residents turned out Saturday morning for the annual March of Dimes Walk, a fund-raising event that benefits the March of Dimes in its research regarding birth defects and premature births.

The walkers enjoyed the clear though cool weather as they began from the City Landing, walked down Main Avenue to Washington Street, turned onto Walnut Avenue, then turned again at Capitol Street, completing a circle of the Public Square Park before walking back down Main Avenue and back to the City Landing.

“We raised more than $11,000, and there are still some donations yet to be counted,” said Jennifer Thomason, the community director for the March of Dimes. “I’m happy with what we’ve done here this year.”

Thomason said that the turnout was less than expected, and thought that the change in venue from the SportsPlex to the City Landing may have led to lower numbers, although she said she appreciated each walker who came out and each person who made a donation.

Those wanting to make a donation to the March of Dimes may contact Thomason at 289-6814 or visit her at the Robertson Banking Company’s downtown branch.
