Nothing wrong with a little OJT

I grew up with the Internet.

Not that it’s been around it my whole life. I literally grew up along side it.

When I was a baby in the early 80s, people knew there was something capable of serving as a network for those who use it, but I don’t think anyone knew what it was capable of becoming.

As I got older, the Internet changed. It became a little more common. When I was in the eighth grade America Online was the thing to have. I don’t even know if there was anything else.

I remember being holed up in my room instant messaging friends that, without the Internet, I would have had to ride my bike all the way to their house – not more than a few blocks away.

I made friends from far away lands – I think. There’s really no way to know if there were where they said they were.

It was a social must-have in the late 90s. Sure my Dad thought it would be good to have Internet access for me to use scholastically, and it probably would have if I’d used it for that.

When I went to college I gravitated toward newspapers, something I would classify as the polar opposite of the Internet. I thought my interaction with the World Wide Web would remain social.

My college newspaper enlisted the services of a “web guy,” who updated and handled the website. It wasn’t until I entered the working world that I was forced to learn how to maintain a website.

For those of you who read the on-line edition of the Demopolis Times, please know that is updated by the very same people who work to produce your daily printed product. The art of multi-tasking is one we’ve all had to learn.
