Foscue House Restaurant on U.S. Highway 80 West in Demopolis was the scene of an apparent burglary. Owners Shawn and Brandi Hill believe it happened sometime late Monday night.

“They cut the phone lines,” Brandi Hill said of the burglars, “and there were no calls on our caller ID from Tuesday, which is unusual, so it had to be sometime Monday night.”

The restaurant is open Thursday through Sunday each week.

The burglars broke through the window of one of the back doors after disconnecting the alarm speakers, then rifled through the restaurant, apparently seeking money or valuables. The cash register only had coins inside, but the burglars still took that. They also made off with a wide-screen TV.

“They didn’t touch the liquor,” Brandi Hill said. “I can’t believe that.

“I just can’t stand the thought of someone just breaking in like that.”

On Wednesday, the Hills were making repairs to the damaged parts of the historic restaurant. The two-story brick house was build by Augustus Foscue (the father-in-law of Dr. Bryan Watkins Whitfield, whose father built the historic mansion Gaineswood) in 1840, and is still owned by his family today. It began operation as a restaurant in the 1980s.
