The United Way campaign at Alabama Power Company’s Greene County Steam Plant was a huge success, exceeding its goal of $19,000, despite a slumping economy.

The 2008 goal was slightly more than last year’s goal of $18,000.

“We had different events,” said Shenita Conwell, an administrative support specialist at the plant who chaired the United Way campaign. “We had bake sales, raffles; we had a hamburger sale. People gave contributions, either a one-time donation or through payroll deductions.

“We started our annual campaign around September, and it ended towards the end of November. The donations will go to the United Way of West Alabama. We were very pleased with the result, with the economy the way it is, to be able to raise $19,000.”

Donations will go to local programs and organizations, including 2-1-1 Information and Referral Service, Alabama Head Injury Foundation, American Red Cross, The ARC of Tuscaloosa County, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of West Alabama, Boys and Girls Clubs of West Alabama, Caring Days, Child Abuse Prevention Services, Easter Seals of West Alabama, Family Counseling Service, FOCUS on Senior Citizens, Girl Scouts of North Central Alabama, Good Samaritan Clinic, Hospice of Fayette Medical Center, Hospice of West Alabama, Mental Health Association, Phoenix House, The Salvation Army, Success by Six, Temporary Emergency Services, Turning Point, Tuscaloosa’s One Place, United Cerebral Palsy of West Alabama, West Alabama AIDS Outreach and YMCA (Barnes and Central branches).
