There were a number of big moments during Saturday night’s win over Linden. There was Jeremy Wallace’s and-1 drive with 1:22 remaining that handed DHS the lead. There was his follow-up free throw that extended the advantage. There was Anthony Hardy’s clutch trip to the line with under a minute remaining that padded the lead even more.

But, of everyone who contributed considerably to the win, perhaps none was more important than Michael Davis. Affectionately known as “Big Face” to teammates and coaches, Davis’ numbers don’t stand out on a stat sheet. Truth be told, however, his value can’t be entirely quantified by numerals and averages. There is no amount of pencil strokes in head coach Jesse Bell’s book that can tell exactly what Davis meant to his team Saturday night.

In fact, only those paying close attention to the game could really grasp how important Michael Davis was to his team’s efforts.

One such individual was teammate Fred Irby. The DHS junior big man scored 13 points in the game to lead his team. But when asked who he thought should earn Player of the Week honors, he said simply, “I give my game ball to Michael Davis.”

But why does Davis deserve such an honor?

Well that answer is simple. The Tiger forward spent a large portion of his night defending larger players in the post, doing the little things that help make the DHS offense go and, most noticeably, diving to the floor for nearly every loose ball.

“Right now he’s my best player on the floor,” head coach Jesse Bell said of Davis. “Big Face is playing to his strength. He brings his ‘A’ game every night.”

The consummate unselfsih teammate, Big Face’s “A” game is more than enough to earn him both POTW honors and consderation for the Tigers’ MVP award.
