NEWBERN — The Sunshine girls challenge Akron tonight in the first round of the Hale County Tournament.

“We’re looking forward to going into (tonight) and getting a win over Akron and then we’ll move on to play the winner of Hale County and Greensboro,” Sunshine head coach Phillip Wagner said. A win over Akron sets up a potential rematch with Greensboro, a team that bested Sunshine 62-60 on Dec. 6.

“That’s all they’ve been talking about,” Wagner said of his team. “They’re looking forward to that game against Greensboro. But I have learned since I’ve been coaching that you never overlook your next opponent. You can’t take anything for granted.”

Wagner said winning the Hale County Tournament is one of his team’s season goals.

The tournament finals will take place Saturday at Greensboro High School.
