John A Lucas Jr., age 84, died Feb. 7, 2009, at his home in Lillian. .
Mr. Lucas was born in Laurel, Miss., and moved to Demopolis at the age of 6. He enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1942 and spent three years in the South Pacific, where he earned three purple battle stars.
In 1980, he left Demopolis to work in Tuscaloosa as assistant administrator at Druid City Hospital Medical Centers. While in Tuscaloosa, he graduated summa cum laude from the University of Alabama. In 1986, he became chief executive officer of Fayette Medical Center. After retirement from Fayette Medical Center, he moved to Lillian. In Lillian, he served as board member and chairman of the board for the Spanish Cove POSSA.
He was a 20-year member of the Kiwanis Club, where he served two terms as lieutenant governor. A longtime member of the Demopolis First United Methodist Church, he was a member of the First United Lillian Methodist Church at the time of his death.
Funeral services were be held on Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Demopolis with Dr. Art Luckie officiating. Visitation was from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the church. Kidd-Robbins Funeral Directors of Demopolisis directing the services.
Mr. Lucas was preceded in death by his wife, Faye Lucas; his parents, John A Lucas Sr. and Ruth Lucas; and his brother, Edwid.
Survivors include a daughter, Beverly Osburn of Lillian; a son: John A. (Beverly) Lucas III of Birmingham; one sister, Joyce (Lawrence) Barnes of Demopolis; one sister-in-law, Ruby (Bet) Whitcomb of York; six grandchildren, M’Leigh (Brian) Driskill of Birmingham, Amy (Brian) of Birmingham, Emily (Kurk) Keene of Chattanooga, Tenn., Kayla D’Nene (Daniel) Kingswell of Pensacola, Fla., Michael (Maria) Conn of Pensacola, Fla., and John A Lucas IV of Birmingham; 10 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Active pallbearers were Michael Conn, John Lucas IV, David Barnes, Larry Barnes, John Barnes, Brian Mader, Brian Driskill, Daniel Kingswell, and Kurt Keene.
The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Methodist Men’s Club of First United Methodist Church of Demopolis.
