SELMA – The Demopolis softball team opened its season Tuesday night with a 14-0, five-inning win over area foe Selma.

Demopolis started the game with Melanie McCrory in the pitching circle before turning to Madison Laduron to close the game.

“I was extremely pleased with them both,” head coach Joey Browder said of the tandem that combined to strike out 10 batters and allow two hits over five innings of work. “Melanie showed a lot of poise and confidence, which is going to be the key to her having a successful season. They handled the shared innings well.”

That pair will split time with Madison Bozeman once she is cleared to play.

“I look for them all to complement each other,” Browder said.

Browder said he was encouraged with the way his young team handled itself in the game.

“We communicated well,” Browder said. “We played good, fundamental softball. I like the way we handled ourselves. I liked our teamwork. I liked our enthusiasm. We did a good job of taking care of ourselves.”

RayLee Eubanks led the offensive effort, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Kristin Beach went 1-for-2 with two walks, one RBI and three runs scored while Brooke Bryant scored one run and knocked two in.

Demopolis swiped a total of 16 bases in the game.

“We’ve estabished an aggressive mentality on the bases,” Browder said. “For the most part, we handled ourselves well on the bases.”

Demopolis will play its home opener Thursday at 5 p.m. when it hosts Hale County.
