In 2006, the Marengo County Historical Society held its first Mardi Gras masquerade ball, and it was an amazing success. Now, three years later, they are planning a second ball which promises to be even better.

The only expectation required from those who attend is to prepare to have fun — and don’t forget your mask, says the society’s president, Kirk Brooker.

The ball will be held at Lyon Hall on Saturday, Feb. 21, from 7 to 10 p.m.

Brooker said there will be a live four-piece band playing jazz and zydeco music.

“There will be music, good food and good company,” said Brooker. “We will serve heavy hors d’ouevres and King Cake.

Lemongrass of Demopolis will cater the event.

Brooker said the dress is coat and tie. Costumes are encouraged but optional; however, masks are required.

The fun starts at 7 p.m. with a social hour. The party will kick off at 8 p.m.

“Guests can make their own mask or purchase one to bring,” he said. There will be masks on sale at the Canebrake Craft Corner beside Bluff Hall on North Commissioners Avenue.

Tickets are $25 per person and are available at the Canebrake Craft Corner or by calling (334) 289-9644, Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m.

“Come join the fun,” said Brooker. “Why drive three hours to celebrate Mardi Gras when we have the beads right here?”

The Marengo County Historical Society is a private non-profit association with nearly 400 members.

The society manages four historical properties in Demopolis: Lyon hall, Bluff Hall, Laird Cottage and the Canebrake Craft Corner.

“Events like this help to keep the historical society in the everyone’s minds,”said Brooker. “It’s helps bring attention to the historic treasures we have in Demopolis in a fun, exciting way.”
