The DHS golf team picked up an 18-stroke victory over Fayette County Tuesday afternoon, claiming its first win of the season.

“They played a young team,” DHS head coach Mike Black said of Fayette, “but we just outplayed them today.”

The Tigers shot a 171 overall, matching the tally it posted against Thomasville last week.

Jordan Stone played as the team’s No. 1, shooting a 38 on the day. Russ Seale shot a 45 in the No. 2 slot. Third-seeded Ben McCarter shot a 43 while No. 4 seed James Courtney shot a 45. Fifth-seeded Sean Griffin rounded out the day with a 54.

While Black was encouraged by his team’s performance, he was also pleased with the players who performed in intra-squad action.

“I’ve got some guys that are going to be pushing these guys to get in the top five,” Black said.

That group included Alex Glass, who shot a 44 on the day. Jeffrey Durrett shot a 46 while Cameron Wells and Wesley Watts each put together a 47. Jonathan Large shot a 51 on the day.

“From top to bottom, we improved a good bit,” Black said.

His team plays again Thursday when it hosts Monroe County at The Ravine.

“They’re always pretty strong,” Black said. “They’ve got a good bunch of kids and we always play them pretty hard.”
