The journalism students at Linden City Schools inched one step closer to taking over the school district’s Web sites last week. The students participated in the first of two workshops by University of West Alabama Webmaster Christi George.

The students, under the direction of journalism teacher Mitzi Gates, have been working to plan, design and create Web sites for the high school, elementary school, junior high and Marengo County Technical Center.

Gates said George presented an all-day workshop on Friday about Web site design and assisted in training the students on how to set the site up and maintain it.

“This will not only help the schools by creating Web sites they need, but transport the journalism class at Linden into Web development and internet media — necessary tools for journalists in today’s environment,” Gates said.

The school system had a Web site at www.lindencity.org, but it was never finished, said Gates.

“We plan to keep the sites consistently updated with information students, parents, educators and the community at large will find useful and informative,” she said.

“It sounds interesting, especially being able to plan and design our own Web site,” said student Collette Butler. “I’m looking forward to it.”

The journalism class currently publishes a monthly school newspaper called “The Patriot.”
