Demopolis (3-1) turned in its strongest home outing of the season thus far, besting Thomasville and Monroe County in a Thursday tri-match at The Ravine. DHS shot a combined 170 on the day, finishing seven strokes ahead of Thomasville’s 177. Monroe County finished its day with a team tally of 195.

“I think we’re good right now. I think the team shot well,” DHS head coach Mike Black said.

Jordan Stone, the Tigers’ No. 1, shot a team-best 39 on the day. Russ Seale and Ben McCarter each shot a 42, playing out of the squad’s second and third slots, respectively. James Courtney rounded out his day with a 47, while Alex Glass shot a 49 in his first match as a seeded competitor.

“We’re going to get a lot better,” Black said. “Our team has been very supportive of each other and they’re going to push each other in a competitive way.”

The other six players on the team each competed in exhibition matches against golfers from Thomasville and Monroe County. Cameron Wells stroked a 43 to lead the way in that group. Jonathan Large and Jeffrey Durrett each put together a 46. Wesley Watts shot a 48. Braiden Spiller finished his day with a 51 while Sean Griffin ended with a 55.

“We have to consistently shoot in the 30s and low 40s,” Black said. “That’s the only way we’re going to be competitive when we get to sectionals. I think we’ve got the players to do it. They’re getting better every week. I think we’ll have a good squad representing Demopolis before it is over with.”

Due to next week’s graduation exam and the ensuing spring break, the team will have a 17-day layoff before it competes again.

“We’ll have a two-week layoff,” Black said. “We will practice everyday and try to get better.”

Demopolis will compete again March 23 when it travels to Monroeville to compete Excel, Jackson and Thomasville.
