Ottice Odeal Kirk Johnson, age 98, of Greensboro, passed away on March 9, 2009, at Perry County Nursing Home in Marion.
She was born Nov. 23, 1910, in Pickens County to the late Robert Thomas and Fannie Kate Neeland Kirk. She was joined in marriage to James Monroe Johnson on March 3, 1934, and they moved to Hale County in 1940.
She was employed as a clerk in Cobb Cash Store in 1946 and later worked for W.R. Creel at his dry goods store in Greensboro for 10 years. In February 1962, she joined the staff at Hale County Hospital and did private duty nursing until her retirement.
She was a member of the Kirk Quartet, visiting churches around the region. She also traveled with the Gloryland Quartet, playing the piano and singing solo for a number of years.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, March 11, at 2 p.m. at Oakwood Cemetery in Greensboro. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at Kirk Funeral Homes Greensboro Chapel prior to the service. The Rev. Steve Vernon will officiate. Kirk Funeral Homes Greensboro Chapel is directing the services.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her siblings, Robert Earnest Kirk, Mary Ophelia Kirk Byars, Homer Bartley Kirk, Dewey Hobson Kirk, Blanche Mae Kirk Gallant, Albert Clifton Kirk, Revels Garfield Kirk and Perry Neeland (Lee Estelle Johnson) Kirk; and four stepsons, James Monroe Johnson Jr., Ordrie E. Johnson, Bill Johnson and Arthur Johnson. Perry and Estelle Kirk were Mrs. Johnson’s caregivers for many years.
She is survived by her nephew, Sherrill Neeland (Linda Ryan) Kirk of Marion; her great-niece, Lea Elizabeth Kirk-Luker and her husband, Edward E. Luker, both of Greensboro; and many step-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
