Text messages and e-mails have circulated around Demopolis today, warning of a gang war expected to escalate after dark. A copy of the e-mail forward to the Times warned readers to “stay away from Highway 80, near the Dollar Store and Wal-Mart after dark.”

Demopolis mayor Mike Grayson and police chief Tommie Reese said they are aware of the threats and the department will have officers on patrol. Reese said he has been in contact with law enforcement officials across the state.

“I have checked into the rumors and, as far as we know at this time, it’s just a rumor,” Reese said, “but I have instructed my officers to increase patrols as a precaution. We will be more vigilant to ensure the safety of our city and citizens.”
