The Divas 4 Lyfe and the 334 Boyz — two new teen community service organizations in Demopolis — held a fund-raiser dance at the Jones Recreation Center Friday night.

The dance helped the groups raise funds toward a visit to the NASA Space Center and a summer trip to Florida.

“We are also raising funds to help with our performances,” said the organizations’ sponsor, Malaika Lomax.

“We compete with other schools. We have a step group, we have a dance group and we have a choir.”

Lomax said the fund-rasier was also to help raise awareness of the organizations.

“It helps people know who we are,” she said. “We put the word out, but it helps when everybody knows exactly who you are.”

Divas 4 Lyfe and the 334 Boyz are mostly made up of high school students.

“We also have some middle school students,” Lomax said. “The middle school students felt that it was unfair that we have high school students, so we allowed them to be a part of it. We also have two little sisters from John Essex.”

The organizations have already competed against Livingston and Greensboro. The next competition for the organizations will be a step competition in Eutaw.
