LINDEN — The Lady Longhorns (15-0) put nine runs on the board in the first before cruising to a 14-2, five-inning win over Meadowview Christian Academy Friday afternoon.

“We got the big lead and, as has happened in the past, threw it in neutral and coasted to the win,” a frustrated Todd Mathis said following the game.

His team has outscored opponents 51-4 over its past four games. Mathis was candid regarding his concerns that the lopsided victories will do little to help the Lady Longhorns when they are in a tight game.

“I’m worried about it,” Mathis, whose team will not play again until March 31, said. “We’re going to come back after a whole week off. We’ll come back and play Patrician. If we come back and play lackadaisical, we’ll get beat. I’m concerned about next week. Im concerned about the week off and I’m concerned about that game.”

Meadowview strung together a pair of hits in the first inning to take the early 1-0 lead.

“They got a run on a couple Texas League bloopers,” Mathis said of the Trojans. “That might’ve woke us up for a little bit.”

Mathis’ team responded in the home half of the inning with a nine-run rally.

“They swung the bats well the first inning,” Mathis said.

Marengo settled afterward, posting four in the second inning and one in the third. MCA added its second run in the second inning.

The contest also served as Senior Night for the team, which joined its classmates on the baseball team at Scott Park for one of the final times this season. As part of the festivities, Mathis played all six of his seniors the full five innings. That group included customary reserves Carrie Pope and Shonna Hammond.

“They are the heart and soul of this team,” Mathis said of the duo. “They pick (the team) up. They cheer louder than anybody. They are just as important to this team as the four (senior) starters. They give you whatever they’ve got to give the whole time.”

Pope went 2-for-3 in the game with two RBIs and two runs scored. Hammond finished 1-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.

“That’s the only good thing about (games like this) to be honest with you,” Mathis said of Mathis and Pope’s playing time. “They deserve it just as much as anybody else. They’re good kids and good ball players.”

Michelle Pritchett went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Chelsea Etheridge knocked in three runs. Abbey Huckabee went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Amber Walker went 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Shelby Mathis went 1-for-1 with two runs scored. Kaliegh Robison scored three runs in the game. Chandler Stenz and Katie Tucker each scored twice. Jessica Brock scored once.

Michelle Pritchett pitched the full five innings, striking out 11 and issuing no walks in the game.
