The Marengo Academy Longhorns (11-6) ended a three-game slide Thursday with a 17-7 win over Monroe County.

“We actually played really well,” Marengo Academy head coach Jonathan Lindsey said. “Everybody, one through nine, hit the ball.”

Chris Whitaker led off the game with a double before swiping third base and scoring the opening run. He finished the day 2-for-4.

Christopher Sammons went 1-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Wood Collins went 3-for-4 with two doubles, and RBI and two runs scored. Kyle Schroeder went 1-for-1 with three runs scored. Trevor Johnson went 1-for-4 with three RBIs. Clayton Crocker went 1-for-3 with two runs scored. Dustin McIntyre went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored. Beau Digmon 1-for-1 with an RBI. Jesse Morgan went 2-for-3 with a triple, three RBIs and a run scored. Trace Stenz picked up the win in the game.

“Right now we really had to rededicate ourselves to baseball,” Lindsey said. “We’ve come back from spring break and it’s really done us a lot of good.”

Through the first half of the season, the oft-sporadic MA offense has relied heavily upon production from the heart of its order.

“Wood Collins and Chris Whitaker have really been our most reliable hitters with Chris Sammons in the mix,” Lindsey said.

Lindsey was optimistic after the win and hoped his team could maintain its form as the season continues.

“If everybody keeps their mind right, I’m looking for good things,” Lindsey said. “If everybody stays focused for seven innings, I feel like we could be a good team. Until then, I feel like we’ve got a lot of work to do.”

As the Longhorns look to the stretch run, they also find themselves looking up at first place.

“After we lost to Meadowview, Pickens is the No. 1 seed,” Lindsey said. “Their really playing good ball and I believe we have them Friday.”

MA hosts Patrician Tuesday before welcoming Pickens to Linden’s Scott Park Friday.
