Marengo Academy (16-0) further solidified is No. 1 ranking Tuesday with a 14-0 win over Patrician Academy Tuesday.

“I was worried,” MA head coach Todd Mathis said of his fear his players would underperform following its long layoff for spring break, “but they came out and did everything we asked them to do and played good ball.”

The Lady Longhorns pulled out to a 3-0 lead early and scarcely looked back en route to the win. Kaleigh Robison had two singles, a double and three RBIs. Amber Walker had a single and a double. Shelby Mathis had two RBIs. Abbey Huckabee had a single, a home run and three RBIs.

“She was patient at the plate, did a good job,” Todd Mathis said of Huckabee, who hit her third home run of the season Tuesday. “She took some pitches that weren’t real good, found one she liked and rode it out of the park.”

The offensive outburst backed up the pitching performance of Michelle Pritchett, who moved to 12-0 on the season with the seven-strikeout, two-hit performance Tuesday.

“She did a great job,” Todd Mathis said. “She shut them down.”

The MA head coach said his team showed growth in the game.

“One thing they did do in this game they hadn’t done is nobody let up,” he said. The team plays again Thursday when it travels to Lowndes Academy before competing in a tournament in Montgomery Friday and Saturday.
