Do your part to help the bunny

Ladies and gentlemen, there’s been a little accident with the Easter Bunny.

He was hopping his way through Demopolis late last night, hit a spot of mud over by the city landing and spilled his load of Easter eggs.

David Snow and I rushed to the scene to get a photo, but rather than add insult to injury we saw an opportunity.

“I was up on the sidewalk,” he said. “How in the name of Cadbury did mud get all the way up on the sidewalk?”

David and I explained to Mr. Bunny that Demopolis has been bombarded with one thunderstorm after another and that had he hopped through town two weeks ago, he would have needed his bunny waders.

Having just spilled all the eggs destined for Demopolis’ children, he was in a panic and had to quickly rush back to his rabbit hole in order to make his delivery Sunday morning.

“I’ve got a lot of hopping to do, but I can’t just leave these eggs here,” he said in a fright. “I can’t afford a ticket for littering, not on what I make in a year.”

We persuaded the Easter Bunny to leave the eggs where they were. We promised him that the good children of Demopolis would be more than willing to help clean up the mess and that we would work with Mayor Mike Grayson and Police Chief Tommie Reese to make sure he didn’t get cited for littering.

Mike and Tommie, two long-time friends of the Easter Bunny, were more than willing to help him out.

So today, the Demopolis Times and the Demopolis Public Library will sponsor an Easter Egg Hunt at the Demopolis City Landing Park for children ages 0-10.

Hundreds of eggs will be hidden, most filled with candy.

Several “prize eggs” will contain vouchers for free children’s books and t-shirts donated by the Demopolis Public Library. The hunt will begin at 10 a.m. and will conclude once all the eggs are found.

There is no cost to participate.

In the event of rain, the event will be canceled.

So, parents and grandparents, the Easter Bunny has issued your call to duty.

If your children and grandchildren won’t come to the park today to find these eggs, David and I will have to do it.

We don’t have the pull with the mayor and the police department that the Easter Bunny does and we can’t afford the littering ticket either.
