Demopolis fell behind in the first inning before rallying to defeat Selma 9-5 and win the AHSAA Class 5A Area 5 championship Friday night.

“I am proud of them for doing what they needed to do to get the win,” Demopolis head coach Ben Ramer said following the victory.

The win came just three days after the Tigers dropped the Saints 12-2 in five innings.

“It was an easy game on Tuesday. They made some mistakes Tuesday that made it easy for us to get a win,” Ramer said. “We’ve got a chance to win an area championship and we came out flat. We made some mistakes there early.”

Selma too the early lead when it capitalized on a pair of Demopolis miscues with a Richard Ghant Jr. double. Deion Daniel and Jacolby Adams scored in the inning before Ghant found his way home to give SHS the 3-0 lead.

The Tigers got on the board in the third inning before rallying to tie the game in the fourth.

In that pivotal frame, freshman Alex Sturdivant got the call to pinch hit with sophomore Ben Pettus on first base.
