The Demopolis Kiwanis Club fish fry is an annual tradition to help kick off the youth league baseball and softball schedules, but this year, the Kiwanis Club decided to have it in conjunction with George Spence Day on Saturday, May 2, at the Demopolis Sports-Plex. Plates will be available beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Kiwanis members will be at the Sports-Plex pavilion selling plates of fried fish, hush puppies and cole slaw for $7 each, a meal complete with soft drink. There is a limited number of tickets, available from Kris Mullins at 289-2643 or from any Demopolis Kiwanis member.

“The money that we give to our service projects that we work with and the charities we support like the local Boy Scout troop and Relay for Life comes from events like this fish fry,” said Sam Fish, the president of Demopolis Kiwanis. “This fish fry is the lion’s share of what we raise each year to support those local charities. The more people who come out and get a plate of fish, the more charities we can support.

“We’ve had a lot of pre-sales already, and we really appreciate those who have bought tickets already. By and large, the lion’s share of what we raise stays right here.”

The food was provided by local vendors here in Demopolis.

“We are going to have local catfish, with hush puppies and cole slaw provided by J.C.’s Bar-B-Q,” said fish fry committee chair Lee Jordan.

“We had a really good turnout last year. Even if it rains — and we really hope it holds off — we will still be there. If you don’t buy a ticket in advance, we will be selling tickets at the Sports-Plex.”
