For the second year, golf enthusiasts have the chance to win a dream vacation while they help Demopolis schools.

The Demopolis City Schools Foundation will be the recipient of Birdies for Charity donations for those contributors who pledge their support.

Sponsored by the Regions Charity Classic Foundation, Birdies for Charity has as its goal to raise $250,000 for Alabama charities this year in conjunction with the Regions Charity Classic golf tournament, held May 11-17 at Ross Bridge in Birmingham.

Funds are generated through contributions based on the number of birdies made by champions Tour Players during the Classic.

Donors are asked to pledge two cents or more per birdie, or they may make a flat donation of $10 or more. Based on an average of 800 birdies being hit during the Classic, a two-cent pledge would net $16 for the Foundation.

Each donor can make up to 10 pledges, with each one requiring a two-cent or $10 minimum pledge. With each pledge, a contributor can win in three different ways.

First, those making pledges may guess how many birdies will be hit during the Classic. The donors who guess the exact number will be entered into a drawing to win a three-day “Stay and Play” Package at the World Golf Hall of Fame in St. Augustine, Fla.

The package for two includes a round of golf, a half-hour golf lesson and tickets for the World Golf Hall of Fame.

Second, each donor is eligible for a weekly giveaway. Prizes have included two tickets to the Grand-Am seventh annual Porsche 250 on July 17-19 at Barber Motorsports Park and to the SEC Baseball Championship games.

Finally, the first 50 donors to the Demopolis City Schools Foundation will receive an executive club ticket to the 2009 Regions Charity Classic, a value of $20.

This year, the field of players is one of the strongest ever to play at the classic. It includes Andy Bean, Fred Funk, Jay Haas, Hale Irwin, Bernhard Langer, Sandy Lyle, Nick Price, Jeff Sluman and Lee Trevino.

Those wishing to pledge may do so online at www.regionscharityclassic.com/birdies/make-a-pledge.php.

Entry forms also are available from The Ravine and Demopolis Country Club golf courses or at Regions Bank, from any Foundation member or at the Foundation office at 102 E. Washington St., Suite C.

Members of the Demopolis High School golf team also are supporting the effort. Entry forms are to be returned to the Foundation.

Regions Charity Classic Foundation picks up all administrative costs of Birdies for Charity. The DCSF will receive 100 percent of the collected donations made during the campaign.

Birdies for Charity offers an incentive to each of the organizations signed up for the program. The three groups raising the most money are eligible for matching funds of up to $10,000, $5,000 and $2,500, respectively.
