The Demopolis Quarterback Club hosted its second annual rodeo over the weekend.

“It was a success,” quarterback club president Kenny Freeman said of the event.

Freeman explained that the success of the event was due primarily to the efforts of a number of people.

“At the rodeo, I got a lot of credit from the announcer,” Freeman said. “But that was a group effort by far. I would love to call names, but I am scared I would leave somebody out.”

One of the two primary fundraisers for the club each year, the rodeo raised more than $17,000 in 2008.

“We had better crowds and better gates than we did last year,” Freeman said of the rodeo’s second year. “Last year with the economy being so much better, we pre-sold a lot more advertising. We haven’t gotten our final figures. Last year we made somewhere close to $17,000. I don’t think we’ll do that this year. But we’ll make money.”

Saturday’s proceedings also marked the first time the event was hosted on the grounds at Demopolis High School. In its first year, the rodeo took place at the Sports-Plex.

Even though the 2009 event does not project to pull down as much as its predecessor, Freeman said the club is ecstatic about what this installment was able to produce.

“All in all we were tickled to death considering the economy,” Freeman said.
