In this area, there are many people who have physical disabilities that prevent them from doing everyday tasks.

Oxford HealthCare helps provide care for those unable to do these things themselves.

“We provide homemaker services, which is basic light housekeeping, personal care, assistance with a bath, companionship, skilled and unskilled respite services,” said Kristy Braswell, the branch manager at Oxford HealthCare on Bailey Drive.

Oxford also provides nursing assistants, licensed nurses, staffing services and assistive technology, and most of the homecare services it provides are subsidized through state and federal programs. Oxford can also bill under most long-term care insurance policies.

The Oxford location in Demopolis opened on Jan. 1, 2008, and was the 10th location in Alabama. It covers Marengo, Sumter, Perry, Dallas and Choctaw counties.

“We have people call here all the time,” Braswell said. “I do a referral for them, and I send that to different agencies across the state, trying to get clients on different programs, depending on income and eligibility.

“Eligibility can also be measured by physical conditions, including various health problems. For instance, you have to show why you would qualify for home health services.”

A native of Demopolis, Braswell is assisted by office assistant Hank Bales and licensed practical nurse supervisor Hazel Thomas.

“We have close to 40 staff members,” Braswell said. “They are all certified, and they have a ton of experience. They never miss work, they do everything that I ask them to, and their clients love them. Half the time, we have to tell them to leave early because they only get so many designated hours per day at their patients’ homes. They are really dedicated people.”

Braswell added that she is taking job applications.
