The Demopolis 7- and 8-year-olds’ all-star team ended its season in disappointing fashion Monday night.

After suffering back-to-back losses to Gilbertown, the, 7-8-year-olds find themselves looking back on six hard nights and seven good games.

“We did really well,” said manager Hugh Overmyer of the team’s performance. “Gilbertown was just a bit better.”

Even though the team is now done, Overmyer said that he was proud of the way the boys performed in all of their games. The team battled back from an early loss to Linden only to make its way to the championship game with an extra-inning win over Butler and a blowout over Linden.

“The boys did great Saturday against Linden,” said Overmyer. “They were on fire as far as hitting goes.”

But the all-stars hit a wall against a good Gilbertown squad. The first game came down to the wire, with Gilbertown taking advantage of being the home team, coming away with a win in the bottom of the sixth.

“I really thought we had that first game,” said Overmyer. “It hurt to lose.”

The second game was not as close, and the Demopolis boys came home a little earlier than they wanted.

However, Overmyer said that there is no reason for them to hang their heads. He said that the team played hard for the time that they were together. They fought each and every game, and were willing to learn during the process.

For Overmyer, it was a learning experience as well. He said that his first time coaching an all-star star team couldn’t have gone better.

“It was a lot of fun. I enjoyed it a lot,” said Overmyer. “The kids were great to work with, and all just wanted to have fun and win.”

So, now that their time together is over for at least a few more months, Overmyer said that there are only a couple of things he told his team to do, a statement that rings true with any disappointing ending.

“Have fun this summer, and look forward to next year.”
