Just the F.A.C.T.S.

The First Presbyterian Church of Demopolis will hold its annual Vacation Bible School the week of June 29-July 3. With a theme of “Find the F.A.C.T.S.,” children will experience a VBS like none other FPC has hosted before.

“This is something new for us,” said pastor Tommy Carr, “because we are doing everything from the ground up, including the curriculum.”

Developed by members of the congregation and the ministerial staff, the lessons for each day will be introduced by the new puppet ministry team “SonLight.”

The idea for a puppet ministry came from a missions conference attended by First Presbyterian members last February. After learning about puppet evangelist Linda Summer and her ministry, “The Agape Puppets,” First Presbyterian decided to start its own team. Members of the congregation helped purchase equipment by “adopting” a puppet. The puppet ministry team is scheduled to travel to California in late July to participate in a cross-cultural ministry.

While “SonLight” is an integral part of this year’s VBS, children will also participate in other activities such as “chalk talks,” recreation and snacks. “Chalk talks” consist of telling a Bible story while drawing a picture with chalk.

With prayer as the overarching theme, children will discover a different function each day that prayer serves in one’s relationship with God. By the end of the week, the children will know exactly what the “F.A.C.T.S.” are.

“F is for fellowship, and having it with God just by being with Him,” Carr explained. “A is for adoration, which is praising Him for who He is and what He has done. C is for confession, which is confessing our sins. T is for thanksgiving — giving Him thanks for all His blessings. Finally, S is for supplication, which is asking God for specific needs, both for you and for others.”

The goal of this year’s VBS is to provide a prayer guide for children in teaching them how to pray.

“Prayer is sometimes intimidating, even to adults,” Carr said. “We want to introduce prayer and help them to be comfortable with the idea of talking with God.”

Vacation Bible School is open to all children age 4 through the fifth grade. Registration begins Monday at 8:30 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, located at the corner of Capitol and Strawberry streets. VBS will last from 9 a.m. to noon each day. More information can be found by calling 289-3895.
