Local business and civic leader Enoch Northcutt Jr., age 87, passed away on Friday after a brief hospitalization for a hip fracture sustained in a fall at his home.
He was born on Aug. 9, 1921, in Evergreen. He served in the U.S. Army in Europe as an infantry officer with the 28th Infantry Division, “the Big Red One,” remarkable for receipt of two Purple Hearts and being a prisoner of war at Oflag 64 in Poland. He retired from Vanity Fair after 35 years, having served as plant manager in Butler, Jackson and Demopolis. He was active in the Demopolis Rotary Club, where he was director of its Crippled Children’s Golf Tournament and recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship Award. He also served on the Demopolis City Schools board.
Funeral services will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church in Demopolis on Tuesday, July 21, at 11 a.m. with interment following the service at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Prairieville.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lloyd Northcutt; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E.L. Northcutt; and five siblings, Walter G. Northcutt, Leona N. Harper, Mildred N. Nutter, Barbara N. Guyton and William B. Northcutt.
He is survived by three children, Kathryn N. (Billy) Cunningham of Josephine, John E. (Nancy) Northcutt and Angela N. Holifield of Demopolis; a brother, James N. Northcutt of Gadsden; eight granddaughters, Elizabeth C. (Shawn) Thomas of Missoula, Mont., Anne C. (Carleton) Compton of Tampa, Fla., Mary Kathryn Cunningham of Josephine, Jennifer N. (Mark) Bedsole, Mary L. Northcutt, Brittany L. Northcutt, Ashleigh E. Holifield and Emily K. Holifield, all of Demopolis; and three great-grandchildren, John David and Thomas Bedsole of Demopolis and Kathryn Mitchell Compton of Tampa, Fla.
Pallbearers will be his nephews, Roy Harper Jr., Jeff Nutter, Jack Nutter, Ben Northcutt, Eric Northcutt, Russ Guyton, Reid Northcutt, Harrison Northcutt, David North-cutt and Glenn Northcutt.
