The West Alabama 13U all-star team finished its state tournament run in Satsuma Tuesday with a 6-2 loss to Monroe County in the single-elimination round.

The loss came at the tail end of a weekend in which the team went 1-3 in pool play.

The boys opened the weekend with a 12-2 win over Brewton on Saturday. Sunday saw the team lose to Wetumpka 12-2 and Opp 16-9 before Monday witnessed a 15-12 loss to Satsuma.

“There were times when we needed to get an out or get a run across and it just didn’t happen,” West Alabama coach Derek Morrison said. “(The boys are) all disappointed.”

Morrison said the team remained in every game except for its tilt with Wetumpka.

“In the other three ball games, we rallied to try to make a run at it,” he said. “Our pitchers did pretty well. We just didn’t make routine plays in the field consistently.”

Despite the 1-4 record, the team managed to score 37 runs in the tournament.

“As far as hitting goes, Josh Mangum and John Anthony Morrison hit the ball pretty consistently,” he said. “We had a lot of guys coming off the bench and getting us started in some of those rallies.”

While the results were not what the team hoped, Morrison said the group obtained valuable experience in the process.

“There were some real good teams,” Morrison said. “Other than the Wetumpka game, I felt like there were some games that we were in it the whole time. It just didn’t work out in the end. I think this team came together better as 13-year-olds than they did as 12-year-olds as far as getting down and battling back and pulling for each other.”
