Demopolis City Schools announce teacher hirings

The Demopolis City board of education hired a number of teachers at its regular meeting on July 20 and at a special called meeting on Thursday.

Among those hired on July 20 were Demopolis City Schools special education coordinator Martha McKnight and choral music director Frank Calloway for Demopolis High School and Demopolis Middle School.

Westside Elementary School: special education aide Sylvia Tate and reading coach Tracy Stewart.

U.S. Jones Elementary School: teacher Adam Sealy and special education aides Glenda Bradley and Kelee Williams.

Demopolis Middle School: cook Rose Knott, English and language arts teacher Donmonique Gracie and special education aide Reginald Atkins.

Those officially hired on Thursday were DHS math teacher Renee’ Sheppard, DHS JROTC officer Capt. Dennis Shoemaker, DMS special eucation teacher Stephanie N. White and DMS special education aide Lakeshia Horton Harris.

Also at its July 20 meeting, the Demopolis board of education accepted the resignations of WES reading coach James Pope, DMS language arts teacher Pam Vickers and fifth-grade teacher Stephanie R. Billups.

Pope, who helped Westside Elementary earn the international Exemplary Reading Award last year, became the principal at Knox Elementary School in Selma.

At the special called meeting on Thursday, the board voted unanimously to name the new Demopolis High School stadium Tiger Stadium. It tabled naming the DHS tennis facilities.

The next meeting of the Demopolis City Schools board will be on Monday, Aug. 17, at 5:15 p.m. at the board of education office on Cedar Avenue.
