England wins Marengo County’s Junior Miss

Demopolis High School senior Rebecca England was named Marengo County’s Junior Miss at the scholarship program held Saturday at the Old School in Demopolis.

England was awarded the Junior Miss medallion by program coordinator Katie Echols. 2009 Marengo County’s Junior Miss winner Hillary Stapp was not able to attend the program because of studies at Southern Methodist University.

Harley Glass of Patrician Academy was named first alternate, while Fallon Keen of Demopolis High School was named second alternate.

The Junior Miss scholarship program allows seniors to compete for scholastic fund prizes at the local, state and national levels. Contestants are judged in a 10-minute interview and discussion session (25 percent of the score), scholastic achievement (20 percent), talent (25 percent), poise and fitness (15 percent each).

For winning the competition, England earned $2,000 in scholarship funds. Glass earned $1,500 as the first alternate, while Keen earned $1,000 as the second alternate.

Glass earned an additional $1,000 in winning the Spirit of Junior Miss award, selected by the contestants.

The winners of each category earned $800 in scholarship funds, while the alternate earned $400.

In the talent category, England earned the $800 award after singing “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” from “The Sound of Music,” while Glass earned the $400 alternate award after performing a comedic monologue, “The Ugly Stepsister.”

In the physical fitness category, Kathleen Randall of Demopolis High School earned the $800 scholarship fund award, while England earned the $400 alternate award.

In scholastic achievement, England earned the $800 award, while Cassidy Gibbs of Patrician Academy earned the $400 alternate award.

In the poise category, England earned the $800 award, while Glass earned the $400 alternate award.

Other contestants included Madison Duckworth, Fallon Keen, Anna Low and Kathleen Randall of Demopolis High School; A’Keveyai Fowlkes and Kayla Retic of Sweet Water High School; and Shaneqa Anderson of A.L. Johnson High School.

England will represent Marengo County at the Alabama’s Junior Miss program in Montgomery in January.
