Demopolis (6-1, 3-1) dominated from the outset and scarcely looked back Friday night on its way to a 55-0 Homecoming win over region foe Monroe County (1-6, 1-4).

“We had a really good week of practice,” DHS head coach Tom Causey said. “All the kids practiced their tail off this week and you saw the result of it when they got a chance to get on the field.”

Demopolis forced a three-and-out to open the game before Damarcus James scored on a 28-yard run. The jaunt capped a five-play, 33-yard drive that led a Matt Sellers extra point and a 7-0 lead.

After DHS added a safety on a botched punt snap for a 9-0 lead, the home Tigers covered 31 yards in two plays to extend the lead to 15-0. The possession ended on a 24-yard touchdown pass from Ben Pettus to Larry Cobb.

Six plays from scrimmage later, Jeremy Wallace added to the lead with a 70-yard interception return for a touchdown. The Sellers PAT made it 22-0 with just over a minute to go in the first quarter.

After another MCHS three-and-out, Demopolis pounded the ball on four straight plays with James before Pettus went over the top to Wallace for a 35-yard touchdown to stretch the lead to 28-0.

The DHS defense stood strong again for another three-and-out, setting up a four-play, 56-yard drive. That march culminated with a 26-yard touchdown run by freshman Saul Palmer.

“He earned it,” Causey said of Palmer, who ended his night with eight carries for 60 yards. “He practices hard everyday. I told Saul before the game he was going to big night because of how hard he practices every week.” Sellers added the kick to make it a 35-0 Demopolis lead.

Cobb ended Monroe’s most promising drive of the first half with a 32-yard interception return to the MCHS 3. James then finished the job with a three-yard TD run. Sellers’ kick made it 42-0 at the half.

Demopolis added to the lead in the third quarter with a 24-yard touchdown run by Pettus and a one-yard score by freshman backup quarterback Tucker Jones. Spence Overstreet connected on the PAT following the Jones’ carry to cap the scoring. James led the home Tigers with 132 yards and two scores on 11 carries. Demopolis finished the night with 288 yards on the ground and 347 overall while holding MCHS to 43 total yards.

“The game is what they need to remember,” Causey said of his senior players. “You won’t ever forget your senior year homecoming game. Mine was 22 years ago and I still remember it. They won’t ever forget theirs.”
