The driver of a pick-up truck riding on U.S. Highway 80 passed out, lost control, jumped the curb and crashed into the home of Mr. and Mrs. Foy Wright on Thursday.

According to official reports, the driver of the pick-up truck, Traymon Williams of Safford, had a seizure and lost consciousness while driving westbound on U.S. 80. He jumped the curb, ran into a West Alabama Mental Health Center highway sign, crashed into the house and through the den of the Wright house on South Main Avenue. He did not regain consciousness until after he arrived at the hospital.

Foy Wright, who was sitting in a chair less than 10 feet from where the truck came into the room, said he saw the driver tremble, then slump over.

“At first, I thought he was dead,” Wright said, “but then, I saw he was still breathing and called 911.”

The driver was taken by ambulance to Bryan W. Whitfield Memorial Hospital. Wright was unharmed in the accident.

The truck went through a wall at the edge of the house and went all the way to the back wall before stopping. Damage was caused to windows, furniture and wall hangings.

Wright’s wife, Hettie, was shopping when the accident occurred. She said that if she had been at home, she would have been sitting on a couch directly in the path of the truck.

The accident took place at 12:20 p.m. Thursday.
