Kudos for ‘pull ’em up’ ordinance

On Thursday, the Demopolis City Council discussed an ordinance concerning what many people consider inappropriate dress — the practice of wearing your pants so low, your underwear is visible.

“I have received so many complaints about young men going down the street with their pants down, no shirt on, their boxers showing,” councilman Mitchell Congress recalled.

“I think it’s disrespectful and indecent.”

We couldn’t agree more.

Discussion brought changes to the original proposed ordinance, setting the fine at $25 to $100 for both juvenile and adult offenders and the community service sentence to 20 hours for adult offenders and 10 hours for juvenile offenders.

The ordinance will be rewritten to include the approved changes, and will have its first reading at the Nov. 5 meeting.

We hope and expect that the enforcement of this ordinance will quickly solve this problem.

A few tickets with the additional loss of a few weekends to community service will likely be more than enough to deter those who prefer this manner of dress.

We applaud the city council for taking this action and appreciate police chief Tommie Reese for making this part of his department’s daily task.

As people pass through town, what they see is a reflection on all of us and we certainly want to put our best foot — not underwear — forward.
