Anyone riding around Demopolis on Saturday would have been hard-pressed not to see a yard sale. Several families were taking advantage of the pleasant weather and the break in the seemingly constant rain to sell off odds and ends that were no longer needed.

At the Demopolis City Landing, the Demopolis Area Chamber of Commerce and the Tenn-Tom Tourism Association were sponsoring the 234-mile yard sale that began near Iuka, Miss, and followed the Tennessee and Tombigbee river system all the way to Demopolis.

A number of local vendors set up tents to sell their wares on the barbecue field last weekend.

“I’m selling G-style clothes,” said Malcolm Branch. “We have a store at 306 E. Washington St. in Demopolis, and well sell this style of clothes there as well.”

“We came out here at 5:30 (Saturday) morning,” said Beverly Owens. “Sales have been pretty good.”

“I’m selling costume jewelry, used clothes and purses,” said Ola Barton. “It hasn’t been too busy, but things got pretty busy around 9:00.”

At the Fitz-Gerald and Perret Clinic on U.S. Highway 80, Providence Baptist Church sponsored a yard sale to benefit its youth conference.

“We’ve had a really good turnout,” said youth leader Paul Malone. “We’ve sold a lot of stuff, and it’s been a success.

“The youth conference is called Connect, and will be held in Gatlinburg, Tenn., in December.”

People in Demopolis had several choices to find bargains at yard sales last Saturday, and several Demopolis citizens were able to make a small profit as well.
