William Barton

William B. “Bill” Barton, age 80, passed away on Friday, Oct. 16, 2009.
He was a native of Holt and a veteran of U.S. Army. He was retired from Gulf States Paper Co. after 48 years of service. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Demopolis, where he had served as a deacon, and was a member of Campers on Mission Foscue Park ministry and the Old Fellows Band.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Velma Nichols; his father, George Barton; his mother, Maurine Nichols Barton Owen; and his daughter, Faith Barton.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Janice Fisher Barton; two daughters, Cathy Adams and Jan (Van) Baty: one son, Michael (Heather) Barton; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandson; three sisters, Carolyn (Bill) Shuman of Northport, Tommie Owen of Tallahassee, Fla., and Mary Katherine Owens of Birmingham; two nieces and three nephews
Services were held on Monday, Oct. 19, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Demopolis with the Rev. A.L. Courtney, Dr. Allen Atkins and the Rev. Brooks Barkley officiating. Interment followed at Tuscaloosa Memorial Park in Tuscaloosa.
The family received friends at Kidd-Robbins Funeral Home Chapel, Sunday, Oct. 18, from 2 to 4 p.m. and at the church on Monday, Oct. 19, from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m.
Pallbearers include Mike O’Neal, John Atkins, Parker Adams, Connor Adams, John Malone, Fred Roeman, Bill Shuman and Henry Baxley. Honorary pallbearers include Hugh Lloyd’s Sunday school class and the Old Fellers Band.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Demopolis, 109 S. Strawberry Ave., Demopolis, AL 36732.
