Brunch to honor retired teachers

Teachers greatly impact communities as they work with their students. Educators often work for years with little or no recognition of their efforts and accomplishments.

Now the community and former students have a chance to show their appreciation.

The Demopolis Education Association, in partnership with churches and civic organizations in the city, plans to provide that recognition at a brunch Monday, Dec. 7, to “Celebrate Golden Angels.”

The brunch for retirees of the Demopolis public school system and special guests will be held at the Demopolis Civic Center beginning at 9 a.m. The Demopolis Education Association is made up of teachers and support personnel in the Demopolis City Schools system.

Each retired teacher will be given special gifts during a program that features an invocation by Dr. Allen Atkins, pastor of Fairhaven Baptist Church and greetings from the city by Mayor Mike Grayson.

But Annie Robertson, coordinator of the program, is asking for former students to show their appreciation as well. She is asking them to write short notes or provide a small gift for their favorite teachers to be dropped off at one of the Demopolis school campuses. The notes and gifts will be delivered to the teachers they designate.

“We look forward to seeing all retired educators in the event our printed invitations are flawed and may miss a retiree,” said Robertson.
