Dallas-Selma Community Action and Community Development Corporation has been awarded more than $1 million to help local families who are struggling to pay their heating bills.

The agency, which services Marengo County, was awarded $1.22 million; part of a $20.3 million grant awarded statewide by Gov. Bob Riley.

The grant, awarded through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, helps eligible low-income, elderly and disabled residents pay their utility bills. In most areas of the state, individuals who wish to be considered for assistance should contact the local Community Action Agency.

“Current economic conditions make this energy assistance more important than ever,” Riley said.
