Snow possible in Demopolis area later this week

Demopolis residents are being treated to an unusual sign today: Snow flurries.

While that smattering of snowfall has been short-lived, and few and far between, the Heart of the River Region could be in for a heavier dose later this week.

Jody Aaron, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Birmingham, said chances are good the Demopolis will see some form of precipitation late Wednesday and Thursday.

“Right now, we’re showing a 20 percent chance of precipitation with a low of 26 degrees,” he said Monday. “Thursday is the questionable day. There’s a 60 percent chance of precipitation with a high of 39.”

However, Aaron added, if heavy cloud cover brought on by rainfall or snow were to arrive as projected late Wednesday and early Thursday, that would likely mean the high of 39 degrees Thursday would not be achieved. That result would be obvious.

“If that’s the case, it would snow,” he said. “The moisture is going to be (in Demopolis), but right now, it’s too early to tell for sure what will happen. It’s going to either rain or snow. We just don’t know which one.”

Aaron said it was also too early to project any accumulation levels.

“There’s no reason to expect it to be a lot by any means but it’s still way too early to tell right now.”
