Tuesday was the 100th day of classes at Westside Elementary School, and the students, teachers and administrators gave the occasion all the austerity and dignity that it required.

They all came to school in their jammies!

Every year from time immemorial, Westside has marked the 100th day of classes with its annual Pajama Day, where nightwear is haute couture and students can swap their favorite sneakers in for fuzzy slippers.

“Each year, on the 100th day of school, we celebrate the achievements and hard work of all the students for the first 100 days,” said WES principal Connie Brown. “We couple that with fun activities. For example, they will probably make some hot chocolate or S’mores at one point or another today in the classroom. They’ll read books that have to do with campouts and sleepovers and that sort of thing. It’s a little motivational thing for the students. They look forward to it every year!”

The kindergarten students and their families built snowmen at home and brought them to the school. On Friday, they will put on their “Snowman Extravaganza” with two shows: one at 8:30 a.m. and another at 2 p.m.

Last year, the students sang “The Perfect Hat,” “Five Little Snowmen,” “I’m a Little Snowman,” “I Built a Little Snowman” and, of course, “Frosty the Snowman.”

“These family projects always tend to be fun,” Brown said. “It’s always interesting to see what new things they use to construct a snowman as a family. The program is really cute! They’ll be wearing winter scarves and gloves and sing some winter songs and do finger plays.”
