Donations continue to come in for the Demopolis Police Department’s new drug dog.

On Thursday, DPD chief Tommie Reese accepted a donation from members of the River City Bike Club.

“I read about the police getting a new drug dog, and I said, ‘I’m going to talk to my bike club,’” said Teresa McNeill. “I think it’s a great thing. I think we really need a new drug dog — or two. The River City Bike Club likes to do things that promote the community.”

The department is trying to raise the $6,500 needed to get a new drug dog. Jenny, the current drug dog, is 11 years old and has been with the department for 10 years. She is experiencing health problems, and is due to retire.

She has been used to search lockers, residences and cars and has assisted other agencies in searches as well.

Reese has applied for a grant through the American Working Dogs Association and is seeking funds to help offset the cost.

“We’re probably about $3,500 off,” Reese said. “We need people to keep donating.”

Those wanting to make a donation should make a check payable to the Demopolis Police Department and send it to: City Hall, P.O. Box 580, Demopolis, AL 36732, or to the Demopolis Police Department, 301 E. Washington St., Demopolis, AL 36732. Donations may also be hand-delivered to City Hall or the police department.

Checks should be earmarked as being donations for a drug dog. All donations are tax-deductible.
