The Demopolis High School DTD Club is taking donations for the Bigbee Humane Society, and in each person who makes a donation will receive a handmade Valentine thanking them for their help.

“This is one of their service projects,” said club sponsor Blair Parr. “They are taking up $5, $10 or $15 donations – whatever anyone wants to give – and, in exchange of the donation, the girls have made Valentines with really cute sayings. One says, ‘Roses are red, violets are blue, a dog will be rescued thanks to you.’

“This is something that the girls came up with on their own, and I’m really proud of them. We’re hoping that we can continue to work directly with the Humane Society.”

Later this year, the DTD Club will also help to beautify Missy’s Garden at Bryan W. Whitfield Memorial Hospital. Names for Missy Elmore Scarbrough, who died in a traffic accident in April 2007, the garden is an inspirational area of the hospital.

“They’re going to do some weed-pulling, and there’s going to be some other hard work,” Parr said, “and it will have to be maintained during the summer. It just looks so nice when you get the fresh mulch out there and get it all cleaned up.”

The DTD Club is a community service club with no affiliations with any larger community service club, such as the Kiwanis, Pilot, Civitan, Lions or Rotary clubs. Its service projects include working with the Southside Garden Club, handing out holiday dinners with the Trinity Episcopal Church and working with Missy’s Garden at the hospital.
