Demopolis (6-11, 1-0) scored in each of its three times at bat Monday evening, downing Selma 16-1 in three innings to open its region schedule with a home win.

The Lady Tigers’ lopsided win came despite the fact that they only outhit Selma 4-3. Demopolis cashed in on a slew of scoring opportunities stemming from passed balls, walks and errors. All told, three of Demopolis’ runs came via the traditional method of putting the ball in play.

Demopolis took a 2-0 lead in the first inning before starting pitcher Sequita Carter hunkered down to retire the side. Carter later helped her team’s cause in the third frame with a double to deep left field. After the pitcher gave way to courtesy runner Iverianna Williams, Ashley Allen ripped an RBI single to left to put Selma on the board and cut the deficit to 11-1.

In the home half of the third the Lady Tigers, utilizing a number of their reserve players, plated five runs without the benefit of a hit to end the game under the 15-run rule.

“I think we’re showing up to work and getting better everyday,” Demopolis head coach Joey Browder said. His team started the season at 2-10 before heading into the Tombigbee Tournament at Leroy last weekend. In that affair, the Lady Tigers won each of their first three games, downing Citronelle 5-0, Fruitdale 8-3 and Millry 6-0 before falling to host Leroy 3-0.

“the weekend was great for us. We played together. We played up. We played as a team,” Browder said. “We got contributions out of everybody. it was a total team effort.”

Browder is hopeful that success carries over into a week that will see Demopolis host Carver Tuesday before traveling to Bibb County and Hale County Wednesday and Thursday.

“Our thing is that it doesn’t matter who we play, we’ve got to take care of us,” Browder said.
