Former Demopolis standout pitcher Sara Davis has committed to extend her softball career. The current MMI pitcher committed to Delta State, guaranteeing her the opportunity to realize her goal of playing at a four-year school.

“I’m pretty excited about it,” Davis said. “(The Delta state coach) said she liked what she saw. She said she is pretty excited about my coming.”

Davis, who was nothing short of dominant in high school, graduated Demopolis in 2008 and left the game while attending the University of West Alabama. After a year away from the diamond, she picked the game back up for a semester at East Central Community College (Miss.) before making her way to MMI this semester.

“She’s been a big difference maker,” MMI head coach Joe Guthrie said of Davis. “She’s been a big shot in the arm for us. She’s swung the bat well in limited at-bats. She beat Shelton. We hadn’t done that in our program’s history.”

“I’m glad that I decided to come back and play,” Davis said. “I missed it last year so much when I was at West Alabama and I wasn’t playing. That means a lot that I get to continue playing for a couple more years.”

Davis entered MMI uncertain of where she would fit in on the team but has since turned into a force in the circle. She boasts a record of 10-7, leading the team in wins. Davis has fanned 42 batters over 79.2 innings of work and carries a 3.25 ERA.

“I think I’ve developed more as a pitcher,” Davis said of her growth since high school. “I’ve gotten better to the point that I can hit certain spots.”

The connection Davis made with DSU came primarily through Guthrie.

“We got to know them on the recruiting trail over the summer,” Guthrie said of Delta State. “They needed another arm and Sara is a pretty good one to get. I’ve said it all along, even when I was recruiting her in high school. She has all the tools. That kid is a steal for Delta State. I’d be really surprised if she doesn’t do big, big things there.”
