Monday’s meeting of the Kiwanis Club minds brought with it the determination that the group’s annual fishing tournament fundraiser will contribute its haul to Anna-Coleman Yelverton, the eight-year-old Demopolis girl who is currently locked in a battle with sinus cancer.

“Kiwanis is an organization that really supports youth charities,” Demopolis Kiwanis Club president Willy Hill said. “And we can’t find a better way to use our money than to give it to Anna-Coleman. One hundred percent of the proceeds are going to go to her.”

According to Hill, the decision came to redirect the funds from the annual bass tournament came at the suggestion of club members R.C. Watts and Johnny Brooker.

“We decided at the last minute whatever we would make would go to her,” Hill said. “We’re very proud to be able to help out in any way we can.”

Last year’s tournament raised in the neighborhood of $800 following all payouts.

The 16th annual bass tournament, sponsored by Boyd Duckett, will pay out $2,000 for first place, $1,500 for second, $1,000 for third, $500 for fourth and fifth, $300 for sith and seventh, $200 for eighth, ninth and 10th. The payout is based on the tournament drawing 50 boats

The registration fee is $150 per boat with an optional $10 buy-in for the big fish prize.

Registration begins at 5 a.m. this Saturday at Demopolis City Landing with weigh-in scheduled for 3 p.m.

The Kiwanis Club uses the annual funds raised from the tournament to benefit a number of local charities and causes.
