Marengo County had a 50.4-percent voter turnout for Tuesday’s primary elections, with 7,678 voters out of 15,238 registered voters coming to the polls.

Of those voters, 7,290 took part in the Democratic ballot, while 388 took part in the Republican ballot.

That turnout percentage was fairly even in all precincts, but the Flatwoods precinct had a 66.1-percent turnout, while Putnam had a 59.3-percent turnout and Nanafalia had a 58.2-percent turnout. On the other end of the spectrum the Demopolis Civic Center precinct had a 37-percent turnout.

District 3 had a 52.5-percent turnout — the highest in the county — and District 5 had a 51.4-percent turnout. District 1 had a 37.8-percent turnout.

“Being a state election with the governor usually makes the turnout more heavy,” said Barry Hunt of the Marengo County board of registrars.

“We had a fairly high percentage for the Presidential election in 2008 as well.”

Hunt also said the pleasant weather as well as the offices of sheriff, district attorney and governor’s races brought out the voters.

Among the five Demopolis-area precincts in Districts 1 and 2, about 45.3 percent of the voters turned out, with 2,685 of the 5,928 registered voters in that area participating in the primary election.

The runoff election for Marengo County, which involves the sheriff’s race and the Marengo County Commission District 5 seat, will be held on Tuesday, July 13.

The deadline to register to vote in the runoff election is Friday, July 2.

“There were a few people who wanted to take part in this (primary) election who didn’t register in time,” Hunt said. “So, we will be entering them to take part in the runoff.

“People can register at our office in the courthouse, or they can call us, and we can mail them an application. People in Demopolis can go to City Hall and get the application and mail it to us.”
